Crop And ResizeThe utility below will make quick and easy work of cropping and resizing your images so they will be the right size to upload. It is very simple to use, clicking "Help" gives you clear directions for each step. Just doing it once or twice will make it clear but below the utility are a couple of tips. Anything you do to the image is reversible until you commit to it by saving the finished product so feel free to experiment a bit.

The utility will by default save the new version over the image you are working with, so if the original is valuable to you, you should always work on a copy, never on the original. (This, by the way, is generally true whenever you edit any files with any file editing program.) If you do work on the original, you can force the utility to save your new version as a copy by renaming the file in the file save dialogue box before you click "Save". You will have to give it a name with the file extension (which should be the same as the original), for example "newfile.jpg" when working with a .jpg file. The easiest way to use this is to first put a copy of the original in a folder on your desktop called "WebImages". Now, when you start by going to "File >> Open", choose that copy. If the file open dialogue doesn't open in that folder on your desktop, it is easy to get there by clicking the desktop shortcut in the shortcut bar on the left side of the file open dialogue, then choosing the folder on your desktop. When you are finished and save the image, it will default to the same folder with the same name so you will be all set to just click "Save". To crop, you can start drawing the crop box in any corner of what you want to be the finished area. Carefully choose one corner and put your cursor there, then left click your mouse and holding down the mouse button, drag toward the opposite corner, releasing the mouse button when you are exactly where you want the finished photo to end. If you don't get it right the first time, just ignore that and start again, it will remove the first when you start the second. Once you are happy with what you have, you have to save it. Go back to the menu in the utility, not at the top of the browser, and click "File >> Save". You will get a save dialogue, the utility wants to save the file to the same location with the same name, which is the easiest way to go and which, if you followed the first hint, above will be fine. When you are finished, use the button at the top to go back to the tutorial index or just close this window.
